Does my Rabbit Ever Sleep?
Years ago, rabbits were said to be nocturnal, meaning they slept during the day. However, recent studies have declared that untrue. They are crepuscular, meaning that they are most active during the early morning and late at night. I find that my rabbits get the most sleep in the middle of the day and through the afternoon and around midnight.
Rabbits hardly ever go into a true state of sleep. Most of the time, they have little cat naps, often with open eyes. I heard something about rabbits having a third eyelid they leave closed, so it looks like their awake when they are really sleeping. I haven't done much research on that or experienced anything like this with my bunnies so I'm not sure if it's true.
I think around midnight to 4AM they get the most sleep. Your rabbit will adjust its schedule to whatever yours is; it wants to spend time with you! A rabbit's schedule perfectly matches that of a public schooler. Usually, while the child is at school, the rabbit will nap, and become active again when the child comes home and before he or she leaves for school.
You may never see your rabbit actually go into a deep sleep. I think rabbits rarely do. I find that most of the time, they just nap.
