Showing and Breeding Terms
Rabbit shows are a lot of fun! If you are just going to be a spectator or show a bunny, I encourage you to go! Rabbit shows are open to the public and anyone can go to one. It only costs money if you are showing a rabbit, then it's around $5 per rabbit. SSD
But whether you are showing or going to a rabbit show just to look around, you will probably hear a lot of what is listed below.

- BUCK - Male/boy rabbit
- DOE - Female/girl rabbit
- KIT - baby rabbit.
- KINDLING - Rabbit term for "give birth"
- JUNIOR - Any rabbit under 6 months
- SENIOR - Any rabbit 6 months or older
- INTERMEDIATE or 6/8 - For larger breeds, this is a rabbit between the age of 6 and 8 months. A senior is over 8 months in the larger breeds. Holland Lops do not have this class
- SIRE - Father
- DAM - Mother
- VARIETY - The color of the rabbit
- CLASS - Age group of the rabbit. For Hollands, senior or junior
- BROKEN - A broken patterned rabbit has any color in conjunction with white. The color is "broken up", on a white background
- SOLID - A rabbit with one uniform color; some solids have white bellies, or darker points, but their color is not broken up on a pattern of white
- SSB - Solid Senior Buck. All SSB/BSB/ect/s are shown against each other
- SSD - Sold Senior Doe
- SJB - Solid Junior Buck
- SJD - Solid Junior Doe
- BSB - Broken Senior Buck
- BSD - Broken Senior Doe
- BJB - Broken Junior Buck
- BJD - Broken Junior Doe
- MOLT - When a rabbit is shedding, we say that it is "molting" its coat
- FINISH - A coat of a rabbit that either lacks finish (poor condition, molting, ect), or has good finish (well groomed, not molting), could mean the difference between winning and losing
- PEDIGREE - A piece of paper charting the 3 generations of the rabbit with details such as their weights, colors, and ear numbers/names
- REGISTRATION - Also a peice of paper with 3 generations of ancestors, but this paper states that the rabbit it belongs to is free of disqualifications and has been deemed an acceptable presentation of its breed. The rabbit also receives a registration number unique to that rabbit
- EAR NUMBER/TATTOO - A series of letters/numbers tattooed into the rabbit's left ear. Holly's Cinnamon's tattoo is HHCIN. A tattoo can be whatever you want
- LEG - A leg is earned by winning an ARBA-sanctioned show as long as there are 3 competitors and 5 rabbits competing. A rabbit may earn only one leg per judging. If you hear "My rabbit has 2 legs", chances are those are winnings, not actual parts of its body. For example, Sir Lancelot's father has 33 legs
- BOB - Best Of Breed - best rabbit of its breed
- BOSB - Best Opposite Sex Breed (if the Best of Breed was a buck, the BOSB MUST be a doe)
- BOV - Best of Variety - best rabbit of its variety
- BOSV - Best Opposite Sex Variety (if the best of variety was a doe, the BOSV MUST be a buck)
- BIS - Best in Show - Best rabbit shown at the show that day. This is big. To win it, your rabbit must first win BOB. At the end of the show, all breeds that won BOB compete for the BIS title. The Best of the Best
- RIS - Reserve in Show - Runner-up to Best in Show. The next best rabbit
- DQ - Disqualification
- CONDITION - If a rabbit is rough in flesh condition, it is skinny and its bones can be easily felt. Rabbits can also have too much condition; that would be fat
- OPEN - Usually refers to an all "adult" show. Anyone of any age is allowed to enter, but usually it is all adults against adults with high quality rabbits since most adults have been showing since they were youths
- YOUTH - An all youth show. Only kids from the ages of 6-18 can show in youth
- CULL - To remove a rabbit from the herd, by selling as a pet, or terminally culling, referring to killing
- CAVY/CAVIES - Not a rabbit, but sometimes shown at rabbit shows. A guinea pig
