How to Make a Pedigree
I have a detailed video on my YouTube channel all about how to make a pedigree, but since some people learn better through written words, I'm writing it here as well. The video is included below.
To make a pedigree, you need the pedigrees of the parents. That's how you start. You CANNOT make a pedigree without the parents' pedigrees, unless you somehow know all the information of the generations before. For a pedigree to be complete, it must have the Name, Ear #, Color, and Weight of each member of the pedigree.
Name: Must include the prefix, or the breeder's title. Mine is "Holly's", indicating my Holly's Hollands Rabbitry. If the rabbit is not named, then the ear # is placed where the name would be (example: Holly's Cleo or Holly's HHCL).
Ear #: This is up to the rabbitry to provide. An Ear Number is a unique number inside the rabbit's left ear to provide identification. The ear number can be any amount of letters and/or numbers. My ear numbers begin with two Hs, for "Holly's Hollands", and then include the rabbit's first two or three letters of their name. For example, Holly's Cleo's ear number is HHCL. Some people do a number system, some people do the first letter of each parent and then the number of litters, etc. The ear number should be unique to the rabbit.
Color: The color of the rabbit. For example, Holly's Cleo is chestnut (sometimes called chestnut agouti).
Weight: The adult weight of the rabbit. Young rabbits (under 6 months) will not have this filled in. If you buy a senior rabbit and this is not filled in, you can weigh and edit the pedigree by adding the weight. However, the breeder is responsible for giving you a complete pedigree (unless the rabbit is younger). Since Cleo is young, I leave her weight blank.
After you have filled in everything for the first rabbit, which is the rabbit you are making the pedigree for, you will put in the sire and dam's information. The top portion is all the sire's side's info, and the bottom half is the dam's side's info.
Sire: father/dad
Dam: mother/mom
You will then use the sire's pedigree to fill out everything on the sire's side. Fill out everything that there is, exactly the way it is written on the sire's pedigree. You will then fill out the dam's side, using her pedigree, and write everything down the way it is written on her pedigree.
And then you're done! Sign the pedigree and double check that everything is correct. Many people hand-write their pedigrees, however there are many software options available if you would prefer to write yours out. Check out Evans software for Windows and Bunny Trail for Mac users.
