At around 4:00pm on October 16, I noticed Saige started to pull fur. I took Rosie's babies to the yard to play, and we were out there for about fifteen minutes or so. When I put them back, I noticed she had started labor.
About 45 minutes later, I went back to check on her. She delivered 3 babies (one is a peanut) in the hay next to her nestbox....but outside the nestbox. She was in her nestbox, so I couldn't put them back in. I covered them up with fur from the cage floor and more hay and left them while mom finished delivering.
About 10-15 minutes later, she had hopped out of the nestbox and I was able to put the three babies back in. She had delivered two more babies as well within the box. One of the babies was pretty big and bruised, but healthy and squirmy. the other one was still in his sac.
When baby bunnies are born, they have a sac surrounding them. Mom immediately eats the sac and the placenta. But I think Saige was busy with the big baby that she didn't even notice the smaller one. It might've been a peanut, as its ears were extremely small.
When I found it, my sister and I cleaned it up and tried to get it moving and breathing, but sadly it had been in the sac too long and was already dead.
Saige delivered 5 kits by 6:30pm. One died, and one is a peanut, so we have three healthy, wiggly babies that are 2 days old today!
All three babies are solids (for once!). Two of them are the same color, and I'm thinking they're both orange. Of course I'm not positive...because they are only 2 days old.
The pictures below are two different babies...but don't they look identical?!
